Breed Standard

The English Springer Spaniel, tallest of the spaniels at 20" is an active, intelligent and friendly breed.

History

The history of the ESS is a long one when spaniels were one all purpose breed that gradually began to be separated and bred for specific purposes such as "springing" game.

Puppies

ESS puppies are adorable and go through a series of stages before becoming an active "high maintenance" adult.

Field vs Bench

Officially there is the Welsh, English and Field Spaniel. But there are specific differences with the English Springer Spaniel commonly referred to as Show or Bench versus Field.

Grooming Whether introducing a field or show ESS into your home twice weekly grooming is required, supplemented with regular maintenance.
Health This long standing breed has few specific health problems but like most dogs there are a few precautions to take.
Books and Links Ensure you know what you are in for with this active dog. Information is easily and readily available. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of springers destroyed, abandoned or placed in shelters by those who found this particular breed did not suite their lifestyle. Booklist and Links included.
What to get an ESS? Want to meet one? Want to talk to those who know springers best?

If you're looking for a guard dog, consider another breed! Although its barking might deter an intruder, the typical Springer temperament is that of a loving, gentle (though active) dog. At best, the Springer might immobilize an intruder while attempting to be petted.

If you want a one-person dog, or if you are away from home a great deal, you might consider a different breed. Springers are intensely people-oriented and are not happy as full time kennel dogs.

Living Conditions - They will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. English Springer Spaniels adapt well to town or city life. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard.

Exercise - The Springer enjoys as much exercise as you can give it. They need lots of it to be happy. They should have chances to take long walks and run and play off the leash. They love to retrieve and swim. These dogs perform very well in both agility skills trials and obedience competitions.

Life Expectancy - About 12-14 years.

Average Intelligence. Requires early socialization and obedience. Above average independant problem solving ability and ability to learn and obey commands.
